On May 9th, I had a stent put in my coronary artery. For months I’ve been having out-of-breath episodes, but I thought it was just because I was getting older, and not getting enough exercise. In the last few weeks it got worse so I went to see my doctor and she sent me for a bunch of tests that ended up with a heart cath and getting a stent. It’s been an extremely educational month with lots of philosophical implications.
Our hearts are just pumps, and our veins and arteries just hoses, but when they stop functioning, it feels very metaphysical. To actually feel them failing is quite revealing about existence and non-existence. I’m sure the faithful would feel heart disease as a spiritual turning point, a time to communicate with God, and contemplate life after death. Since I’m an atheist, I contemplated non-existence and thought about physics, chemistry…

Here’s an interesting take on using augmented reality alongside hobby electronics. The project, which comes from a group of researchers at the MIT Media Laboratory, starts off by making simple electronic devices like a radio with two knobs using network connected hardware. In other words, build something using an Arduino and include a way to get it on a network. With the radio example on knob is for tuning, the other adjusts the volume. But pick up an iPad and aim its camera at the device — which is what the image above is showing — and those knobs will get a lot more functionality. This opens up a whole set of virtual controls that can be assigned to different segments of the knob controllers.
This is certainly a better use of augmented reality than using it in advertisements which is where it usually shows up. We also think that the proliferation…

As a kid growing up in the Catholic church, I had to take my First Communion and also Confirmation. Us kids were excited to make our First Communion as it meant we could ‘partake’ in holy communion. To most of us, we were just happy to do what that adults did. Plus it involved eating that ‘bread’ and drinking that ‘wine’. Bread and wine sounded not too bad. But before we could be awarded with such a prize, we had to first go to confession.
Confession meant kneeling at the side of a small room inhabited by the father. (preacher). We would tell him what we did wrong (sins) and he would forgive us on behalf of God. Well the problem was, we barely knew right from wrong and had to go to pre-confession classes so the nuns could tell us what to say. Beep! Shouldn’t confession be a bit…

فائقة السرية ليلة الجمعة 5 دقائق بالسيارة حزب الرقص [معجزة أطفال الحرب الباردة مايل]
My mom and I are both 5 foot 2. She may actually be 5 foot nothin’, but the fact remains that we are both small.
One day she was chatting with Tito and I, and she dropped this gem: ‘Because short things come in important packages’. To get the full effect, imagine it being said in a sweet West-Indian accent.
Some officious douchbag (I think it was me) presumptuously tried to correct her: ‘Mom, it’s good things come in small packages‘.
She frowned at me for a moment, but then grinned her infectious grin and repeated with confidence (and finality); ‘Nope! It’s short things come in important packages’.
Well, I finally realized that she’s right. This entire post is about a hurdle I have finally crossed – my first socks. I’ve been anti sock all these years thinking ‘why waste time like that?’. They’re amazing. They’re comfy. They fit…

BEN WILSON: Friday nights from March to September were always hallowed nights in the Wilson household. When I was in high school I would tear down Spring Hill after band practice finished at 4:30, stop in at the Myer Centre Woolies for a bag of Twisties and a two litre coke, and then jump on the 5 o’clock bus home where I would sit on the floor of Dad’s bedroom while he lay on his bed, stuffing my face with chips while the epic battles of the early 2000s were fought out on his 10 inch television screen.
Five years later, and much had changed. Mum had decided she wanted in on football bonding time, so we relocated to the lounge room with its mercifully bigger TV, and the chips and coke were swapped for salad as I fervently, (and foolishly,) pursued a private dream to one day appear for…
